2018 Elections: TSE and political parties sign an agreement for not spreading fake news

The president of the Superior Electoral Court (TSE), justice Luiz Fux, and representatives of 10 political parties have signed, this Tuesday (5th), a collaboration agreement for the maintenance of an electoral environment that is immune to the disclosure of fake news, in the 2018 General Elections. The agreement was signed during the meeting that was performed in the Court’s Presidency Cabinet, in Brasília.

Through the terms of the agreement, the signatory political parties “compromise themselves to maintain a healthy informational environment, in order to reproach any practice or expedient referring to the use of false content in the next election dispute,” acting as collaborators against the proliferation of fake news in the election dispute in October.

After the meeting, the TSE president highlighted the importance of not only the performance of organs that prevent and combat fake news, but especially of institutions such as the press, the political parties, and the voters, since they collaborate with this issue “for patriotism, for love of Brazil.”

“The terms of the collaboration are symbolic, and they end ethical commitments. This collaboration is made by people of good,” stated Fux. “The main objective was to bring them [the parties] to our side, in the sense that we can have a clean election, an ethical election, an election in which the Brazilian people can be proud and say that, effectively, Brazil has an exemplary democracy,” he completed.

The agreement was signed by the following political parties: DEM – Democratas (Democrats), PCdoB - Partido Comunista do Brasil (Communist Party of Brazil), PSBD – Partido da Social Democracia Brasileira (Brazilian Social Democracy Party), PDT - Partido Democrático Trabalhista (Democratic Labour Party), PRB - Partido Republicano Brasileiro (Brazilian Republic Party), PSC - Partido Social Cristão (Social Christian Party), PSD - Partido Social Democrático (Social Democratic Party), PSL - Partido Social Liberal (Social Liberal Party), PSOL - Partido Socialismo e Liberdade (Socialism and Liberty Party), e REDE - Rede Sustentabilidade (Sustainability Network).

The document can still be signed by other parties registered in TSE until June 21 of this year, the date in which the Internation Seminar Brazil/EU - Fake News:  Experiences and Challenges will be performed.
