TSE and UNICEF renew cooperation agreement

The Superior Electoral Court (TSE) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) renewed, in December 2016, the technical-scientific cooperation agreement for a two-year period. The partnership aims to carry out joint institutional actions to ensure the right of citizen participation for children and adolescents and strengthen democracy.

A new project, coordinated by the TSE’s Judiciary Electoral School (EJE/TSE) and the UNICEF, is in its final stages of preparation and intends to bring citizenship-related education to public and private high-school students.

According to Thayanne Fonseca from EJE/TSE, the main goal is to broaden the discussion not only about young people as voters but also about democracy, political systems, minorities, the role of the media, among other topics.

“It will be a more comprehensive formation work, with the aid of teachers from different fields of knowledge. The idea is bring young people closer to the democratic political process, encouraging them to form opinions on the subjects so that they become transforming agents of society”, she explained.

The new project is expected to be launched in the first half of this year.
